Firefox 3 Digg Extension Released

Bookmarking site Digg has released an extension for Firefox 3.

Some of the new features that this extension contains are:

- Notifications: No matter where you are on the web, you can discover popular Digg stories and stay up to date on what your friends are Digging, submitting and commenting. These notifications are fully customizable. Within your preferences you can track different categories and media types, and turn notifications on or off.

- Digg Toolbar: Displays Digg counts & comments as you browse around the web. You can also Digg and submit stories directly from the toolbar, which is collapsible to save space. The toolbar respects user privacy by passing only hashed URLs to Digg to check if they’ve already been submitted.

Make firefox run faster consuming less memory

These are two very simple yet very effective tricks for firefox 3.

To make firefox consume less memory do the following steps

  1. Open Firefox and type about:config in the firefox address bar, press Enter.
  2. Search for the following entry browser.cache.memory.enable and see if its true; if not then right click on this entry and set its value to true.
  3. Now, Right-click any where on the page and create a new entry by right click >> New >> Integer and name it browser.cache.memory.capacity and enter the value as mentioned below :
    The value has to be according to the size of your RAM memory.
    If you have:
    256 MB of RAM, enter “4096
    512 MB of RAM, enter “8192
    1 GB of RAM, enter “16384
  4. Restart Firefox.
To make firefox run faster do the following:
  1. Open about:config just like we did above.
  2. Search for the following entries

    * network.http.pipelining
    * network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
    * network.http.proxy.pipelining
  3. Right Click the entries and modify to set network.http.pipelining to true, network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to 30 and network.http.proxy.pipelining to true
  4. Right-click any where on the page and create a new entry by right click >> New >>Integer and name it nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set the value to 0

    This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

  5. Restart Firefox.

How to tell Firefox3 to let Gmail handle MailTo: links?

The default handler of MailTo: links is Firefox3 is Yahoo, so is there anything for a Gmail lover like me? Yes there is. You can change the mailto: link handler to Gmail. Just go through foloowing steps:

  1. Open Firefox and type about:config in the address bar. Ignore the warning.
  2. Search for gecko.handlerServiceAllowRegisterFromDifferentHost and change its value to true either by double clicking or right click-> Modify.
  3. In the address bar paste the following code and press enter javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto",
    "https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","GMail")
  4. You will get a message that says Add Gmail(mail.google.com) as an application for mailto links? ; just click the Add Application button.
  5. Next time when you click on the mailto link you will get a pop up that allows you to choose application for mailto links. Just select Gmail and check the box that says Remember my choice for mailto links and click OK.
From now on all mailto links will be handled by Gmail.
To change this go to Tools-> options->Applications -> mailto.
In the dropdown of mailto select Application Details which will show a pop up. Select Gmail and click Remove.

Some Tips and Tricks for FireFox users

Here are some tips and tricks for all the Firefox lovers

  • To zoom in or zoom out web pages just use "ctrl" + "+" or "ctrl" + "-" on your keyboard.
  • To open a new tab use "ctrl" + "T" and to close the tab use "ctrl" + "W". To reopen a closed tab use "ctrl" + "shift"+ "T".
  • To add a bookmark with a single click just click the star on the right side of the address bar.
  • You can add keywords to your bookmarks for easier and faster access. Go to Bookmarks-> Organize bookmarks. The window that opens up is titled as Library. In the library just select your bookmark and add a keyword to it. From next time whenever you feel like firefoxopening your webpage just type the keyword in the address bar instead of the url.
  • If you’re a Web developer, Firefox’s developer tools will make your life easier. The Mozilla Add-ons site offers many tools to streamline the development process, including Firebug to edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any Web page, Tamper Data to view and modify HTTP/HTTPS headers and POST parameters, and the DOM Inspector to examine any HTML or CSS element with a simple right click.
